Lôn Las Cymru (Welsh : Wales' Blue Lane) is the Welsh National Cycle Route which runs largely north-south from Holyhead to Cardiff and Chepstow.

 

In total it measures some 311 miles (500km) in length, and is Route 8 of the United Kingdom National Cycle Network.

You get 3 options

 

1) The full Route - Normally 8 - 10 days riding

2) Northern section - Normally 4 - 6 days riding

3) Southern Section - Normally 4 - 6 days riding

 

Some of its route follows the trackbed of former railway lines, such as Lôn Las Menai, Lôn Eifion, the Mawddach Trail and the Taff Trail.

 

From Chepstow or Cardiff the route heads towards Builth Wells in the heart of Wales. The Taff Trail provides a largely off-road connection from Cardiff to Brecon and minor roads link Chepstow to Hay-on-Wye via Abergavenny.

 

The Llanthony Valley provides breathtaking views of the Black Mountains, the Cambrian Mountains and Snowdonia await, with respite at the end in Anglesey - the northern point of the route follows quiet minor roads, ancient coach roads and old railway lines to connect the Wye Valley up to the island of Anglesey itself.

 

You need a challenge from time to time and the National Cycle Route of Wales will test you. However, although you travel through several higher ground sections such as the Black Mountains in the south, there are also long stretches of the route, particularly the early part from Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil and later from Criccieth to the flat country roads of Anglesey, that are quite easy.

 

Allow yourself time and it can be done without too much pain.
